General Surgery Department @ Al-Najaf Al-Ashraf Teaching Hospital

The General Surgery Department at Najaf Al-Ashraf Teaching Hospital offers a broad range of surgical services, with a primary focus on gastrointestinal and soft tissue procedures. The department is staffed by four experienced surgeons working in two rotating shifts, ensuring continuous coverage and operational capacity throughout the day.

  • Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Surgery
The department’s core activity centers on the surgical management of gastrointestinal conditions. Procedures commonly involve the stomach, intestines, gallbladder, and associated organs. On average, 6 to 8 major surgeries are performed daily, including appendectomies, hernia repairs, cholecystectomies, and resections for ulcers or tumors.

  • Minor Surgery Unit
Alongside major procedures, the department conducts a high volume of minor surgical interventions. These include the excision of sebaceous cysts and lipomas, nail removal in cases of infection or ingrown nails, and wound suturing. Minor procedures are typically carried out in the dedicated Minor Operating Room or Dressing Room, with 6 to 10 interventions performed daily. The unit is organized to enable rapid treatment, reduce patient discomfort, and minimize the risk of complications.

  • Post-Operative Care
Post-operative management is structured to ensure close monitoring of wound healing, pain control, and early identification of any complications. Surgeons and nursing staff coordinate follow-up care, including dressing changes and personalized recovery plans based on each patient’s condition.

  • Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery
The department also includes a dedicated cosmetic and reconstructive surgery service, led by two surgeons specialized in soft tissue procedures. Services cover the treatment of minor burns, skin grafting, scar revision, and pressure ulcer surgery. Pediatric cleft lip repairs are also performed, following established protocols to achieve both functional and aesthetic outcomes.

The General Surgery Department plays a central role in the hospital’s surgical operations, delivering consistent, protocol-based care for both elective and emergency cases. Close collaboration with radiology, internal medicine, and anesthesia services supports integrated, multidisciplinary management for a wide range of surgical patients.
