Radiology Department @ Al-Najaf Al-Ashraf Teaching Hospital

The Radiology Department at Najaf Al-Ashraf Teaching Hospital provides comprehensive diagnostic imaging services to support accurate and timely clinical decision-making across all medical and surgical units. The department is staffed by approximately 12 radiologists and supported by a technical team of 16 radiology technicians, 4 nurses, and 1 medical physicist. The service operates continuously to meet both scheduled and urgent imaging needs, including those arising from the Emergency Department and inpatient wards. 

The Radiology Department is a critical diagnostic hub within the hospital, supporting a wide range of clinical specialties by delivering reliable imaging data through standardized protocols and modern equipment.  

The department is equipped with 19 dedicated imaging rooms, each designated for a specific modality to optimize workflow and minimize patient waiting times. Core imaging systems include: 

• 2 DR (Digital Radiography) units for general X-ray imaging. 
• 1 CR (Computed Radiography) unit located in the Emergency Department for immediate trauma and emergency imaging. 
• 4 mobile X-ray machines deployed across hospital wards to provide bedside imaging for non-ambulatory or critical patients. 
• CT scan unit, used for high-resolution cross-sectional imaging of the head, chest, abdomen, and extremities. 
• MRI unit, providing advanced soft tissue imaging including neuroimaging, musculoskeletal scans, and abdominal organ evaluation. 
• Ultrasound (Sonar) machines, used for abdominal, obstetric, gynecologic, and vascular imaging, as well as procedural guidance. 
• Fluoroscopy unit for real-time dynamic studies such as barium swallows, contrast studies, and interventional procedures. 
• DEXA unit for measuring bone mineral density and assessing osteoporosis risk. 
• Mammography unit for screening and diagnostic breast imaging.
